Orthodontic Emergencies

Most orthodontic concerns can wait — but some need attention. Here's what to do.

In Case of Emergency

If you are experiencing severe pain, facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, or swallowing, please call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room immediately. Orthodontic concerns can usually be managed during business hours, but life-threatening situations require immediate medical attention.

Loose Bracket or Band

What to Do

Use orthodontic wax to cover the area. You can also use a clean nail clipper to trim excess wire if safe to do so.

When to Contact Us

If discomfort persists more than 1–2 days or causes a sore.

Poking Wire or Irritating Bracket

What to Do

If it’s still attached to the wire, leave it in place and cover it with wax. If it fully detaches, keep it safe and bring it with you.

When to Contact Us

Call to schedule a repair.

Mouth Sores or Ulcers

What to Do

Rinse with warm salt water and use wax to protect irritated areas. Topical gels (like Orabase or Orajel) may help.

When to Contact Us

If the sore is large, persistent, or bleeding.

Injury or Trauma

What to Do

If you’ve suffered a hit to the mouth or jaw, check for loose teeth or bleeding. Apply cold compresses for swelling.

When to Contact Us

Immediately — or go to urgent care if injury is severe.

Lost or Broken Retainer

What to Do

Do not try to wear a cracked retainer. If you’ve lost it, keep your teeth as clean as possible and contact us.

When to Contact Us

Promptly, to avoid unwanted tooth movement.
